Chapter XVI

At Royal Palace in Imladris was a great commotion. After the war, Gondor had regained its king, and soon there was the ceremony of his coronation. Elrond, his three sons, Erestor, Glorfindel, Linde and other elves who were loyal to Aragorn, were invited to participate. The man wanted to be near the people he loved, and at the same time take advantage of their presence to make a pact of mutual alliance between his kingdom and the people of the elves, hoping to be an example for the rulers of neighboring countries.

Linda was up early that morning. The idea to attend the coronation of Estel filled him with joy, but at the same time frightened him such a long journey. It was not used to traveling. He loved to walk in the garden and into the woods, ride the fields, but rarely came out from the Valley. Only within those boundaries, felt safe.
Footsteps on the path.
is out of the window and saw Glorfindel cross the courtyard, followed by some guards, went out for another patrol. Just a few days at the start, and the warrior had stepped up surveillance would be away for several days, and wanted to make sure that everything was quiet.
He walked away from the balcony, sat in front of the great harp and began playing, the sweet melody filled the room and joined in gardening and ears of the warriors. The sound of hooves made him understand that you were moving away, then began to pinch stronger than the strings because I feel more distant. It was his way of greeting when Glorfindel was leaving, he did so often to accompany him at least for a little while its outputs. When he knew he could not hear it anymore, he stopped playing and went to the window again. The warriors were now become dark specks that could be seen in the distance between the light green grass. He stayed a few minutes to look at them and then, as always, clasped hands and gathered in prayer, asking the sky to bring him home safe and sound. He glanced at the side, which overlooks the windows of the corridors leading to the Council Chamber, perhaps Erestor was right there, at that time, and also watched the warriors moving away. And maybe Erestor was praying for his return, he did indeed certain. At that thought she smiled, and said a prayer for their happiness, because they last forever. Their happiness. The happiness of Glorfindel, his only love.

When the small caravan of elves came to Minas Tirith, was greeted with warmth and celebration. The future king, nobles, councilors, members of the Society, all the inhabitants of the Royal Palace and surrounding buildings rushed to welcome. Elladan and Elrohir had left town a few weeks earlier, to fetch the others and escort them on the journey. And now returning seeming almost two different people, the short time spent at home, away from the battlefield, he had calmed.
On the other hand had been so for others. In particular, for Aragorn. The time was anything but quiet and each meeting with prospective advisers reminded him real, but can live for a few days without a fight, you can sleep a peaceful sleep without fear of being attacked, and especially to spend whole days together without having to think of Legolas another, had reassured him very well.
see the arrival of the elves filled his heart with joy and nostalgia. Elrond was also that of his family, for a certain period of time. Not very long, but certainly serene.

After the various greetings and pleasantries, the travelers are retired in the rooms reserved for them to rest. Aragorn
sort out several things, then returned to his apartments.
His most urgent concern now was to talk with Arwen. The lady greeted him as if nothing had happened, with a bow, followed by a fraternal embrace. A few words, and had stepped aside to allow him to greet the other. Then she retired to her room. Was to speak at all.

---

Arwen striding across the aisle. He wanted to talk now with Aragorn, and put your heart at peace. His brothers had told him, he Legolas loved. And that was enough to calm his inner struggle. His doubts, his indecision, his attempt to understand herself and their desires, had become useless. Altogether. He had nothing more to ask, nothing to fight for.
He did not love her, maybe she never really loved.
She was not able to understand what the response would have suggested his heart, or give up immortality to leave Middle-earth with the rest of his people, as he had already forgotten.

He stopped near the window, letting his eyes wander over the vast plains surrounding the city to the foot of the mountains. It was the first time he saw person of those lands. How many times he had imagined in his thoughts, his dreams to be queen. In fact, rather than queen, had dreamed of being a mere woman, mortal or not, who lived beside the man she loved. Nothing more.

Apparently his immortality was to act as a barrier between them. But now he had chosen another. An elf. Still him Aragorn had repeated so many times, he could not accept that she give up her immortality for him ... it was not half elf Legolas, could not choose to be mortal, but by binding him, would still not have survived his death. Because by then he had not made such scruples? Simply
Estel loved Legolas. That's it.

Collection in thought, he reached the door and knocked on the apartment floor of Aragorn.

The man opened the door without asking who had knocked. Did not need it. He had learned to recognize his delicate touch on the wood. He stepped aside and let it go.

"I wanted to talk," she said, while advancing into the room.

"I, too," he said.

There was a brief awkward silence that Aragorn felt to break at all costs.
"I do not know where to start." He said, "But I have to apologize."
"No, do not apologize for anything. I feelings are something that can not be commanded, "she said approaching the window. He felt pathetic to say the words, but all in all, was that the only truth.

He hesitated a moment, the brothers had told her all the time.

"No, I had already figured out," she said, guessing her thoughts. "My heart ... he knew it. Some things, they feel even at a distance, you know. "
He lied, of course. But he would not tell him how there was really upset.

He sighed softly. "I wanted to be the one to tell you. I'm sorry. ... I do not want to justify myself, I just ... wrong Arwen, I should have ... "

" No, leave it alone, "she interrupted. "After you've always been doubtful. You always said you love me, but at the same time did not want to accept that I will follow. Legolas did not you with these problems, then obviously for him to try something different ... you do not have to justify this. I too was very upset, and you know, I realized I was not really ready to become mortal. So ... is better than how it went. "And he spoke the last words, he averted his gaze, as if afraid that he will read anything. She used a tone of quiet and subdued, as if speaking of something perfectly normal. Only hands, he held tight in her lap with his fingers intertwined, betrayed his tension.

"Arwen, I ..."

"No. Do not say anything. "

You preferred him to me. That's it. Nothing more to say.

"I did not want to hurt you. Believe me. "He said.

"I know, do not worry about me, I'm fine. I just want you to be happy, and if you can be with him, just like me. " He knew too well not to know that this story had brought great suffering to him.

"I wish you were happy too."

"I will be," said she trying to smile.

Then Aragorn went to a cabinet drawer and pulled out a small casket. He opened it and took over the court that she once gave him and approached her.

"No," she said, even before he spoke. "Do not say you want me back"

He hesitated a moment, "When you gave me, you did for a reason. Now is your right to come back. "

" No "he put her with a sweet tone that brooked no reply yet" was a gift. I do not have to give back. I do not pretend that you still take him. Keep it in my memory, and memory of the time we spent together. "

The man remained silent for a moment. She continued. "It will be a thing of mine, and of our relationship."

"I will never forget you, Arwen."

"I know," she said, smiling. "I will not do it myself."
Then he took leave of him, saying he was returning to rest. Output in the hallway, shut the door behind him and let out a long sigh.

was able to talk to him, but he did not feel very relieved.
Indeed, maybe it was even more confused than before. She was disappointed, but at the same time felt he did not have the right. No, he did not own the right, she had doubted. Had promised herself for years, and then, before the shadow of death, he had been afraid. It was not yet managed to overcome his doubts, really wanted to understand things, his love and early death, or eternal life without him, when he learned of Legolas. Estel loved him. And Legolas had returned his love, had given his heart without hesitation, without fear. She was not able. And yet ... for so many years I was certain. Even when he had doubts, and they wanted to pull back. Even with her Estel ...
was not sure ... but did not hesitate to accept the love of Legolas.
Or perhaps he hesitated, as he hesitated the elf. Maybe they both had lived in his own fears, but were able to overcome them. Maybe they were just two people stronger and decided to her. Or perhaps, simply, their feelings were deeper than his.
How many times his parents had asked to reflect on the difference between love and frivolity, and she was still angry, because his feeling was considered just a fad. Yet the face of difficulties you had pulled back. But if it was a whim, because now he did not feel relieved? Why still suffering?

He noticed Legolas only when you found him to boast, just steps away from her. Stared at him surprised. It took a while before he recovered and was dry the tears that rolled down her cheeks. Legolas. The last person who wanted to meet at that time.
The elf looked at her in silence, then opened his mouth to say something.

"No, do not say anything!" She stopped him. "I do not want to hear anything ..."

"I know ... you're hating, right?" Muttered the elf.

She shook her head looking at the floor.
No, do not hate you. I envy you to death, but do not hate you.

"I do not blame you. Really. He made his choice, that's all. "
He paused a moment, undecided whether to continue. The pain was becoming in anger, as she did not want to admit it.
"And then me ... I have sought. I should have listened to my father. Men are weak, their heart is frivolous. They can love you to madness, and then forget shortly after falling in love with someone else. What I should have to wait? "And so saying, looked into his eyes, looking defiant.

He was silent at her, his expression inscrutable face. Arwen stared long deep and sincere blue eyes, trying to read what stirred in his soul. As for trying to hide it, he also suffered.
He lowered his eyes again.

"Forgive me. I just wanted to tell you something bad. ... I am sure that he really loves you. "
then walked past him and ran up to her room, entered and closed the door behind him. He remained motionless a long moment, without thinking and no, he felt empty. He approached the sofa and sat down, moving like an automaton. She began to sob, without even trying to stop the tears running down his face. She cried for the tension, with frustration. For the pain of being cast aside. He had lost his love and was not even able to fight. Then, exhausted, fell asleep.

---

When Aragorn Legolas entered the room, found him standing in front the window, Arwen's pendant in his hand. The man gave him a tired smile, and walked to the cabinet to put away the jewel.

"Have you talked ..." whispered the elf.

"Yes," he said closing the drawer and reconnecting to the window. He looked out, staring at who knows what over the distant mountains.
Legolas approached him.

"I'm sorry for her," he said softly, almost talking to himself "I wanted really well."

"Even I'm sorry. I, too, I have wanted very well. I never wanted to see her suffer because of me. "

remained silent a long time, Legolas then he approached the window and bit her lips a moment before speaking.
"A man ... you happen to fall in love more than once, right?" And that his words made him sick.

The man did not answer immediately, he seemed to search for the right words to explain, as if he felt that pain. "No, I do not think so" he replied finally, "perhaps men are not always able to read deep into their hearts. Sometimes mistaken affection for love. But when they try real love, then we can recognize, Legolas. And that you can try once in a lifetime.
Even if something were to separate us now, I do not I could fall in love again. "

Two days after the coronation ceremony was held, followed by a huge party attended by all the inhabitants of the city and many people rushed from other parts of the kingdom to greet the new King Elessar. It was an enjoyable day for everyone, and happy, after so long.
The following days were entered into numerous treaties of alliance between the kingdoms surrounding the King passed laws and decrees to ensure peace and cooperation with its neighbors, and promises of mutual aid. The Great War was over, but in some towns are still fighting, the King managed to achieve a mutual commitment by men, hobbits, elves and dwarves nell'annientare armies of orcs and evil creatures that still raged in Middle-earth and in the defense of the weakest populations.
Guests stayed at the palace for several days, and continued to party all the time.
Afterwards, everyone returned to his home.
It was a cold and gray morning, when the Fellowship disbanded forever. They left together, following the caravan of the elves, because to a certain point would have walked the same path. Only Legolas, of course, did not leave. He said he wanted to stay for some time to enjoy the forests of that land. Friends greeted with warm hugs, and a lot of nostalgia. As everybody wants to go home, it was sad to leave, after having lived together so long. They said goodbye with the hope to meet again again, sooner or later, but they knew that they would never found all together.
