Chapter XV

The war was over. Sauron was defeated. The last battle was the hardest fought to the extreme of physical and mental strength, poised between hope and terror. But they had won. Frodo and Sam had managed to destroy the Ring. It was all over.

In fact, the war continued in many parts of Middle-earth, small armies were still remote and wild populations to fight and destroy everything in its path. It would take years before the situation calms down again. But the fall of Sauron and Saruman's death, was already a considerable achievement. And anyway, at least in the surrounding areas of southern Gondor, the war seemed really finished. Frodo had been hospitalized in the Houses of Healing, where the best healers were taking care of him, or at least the wounds of his body, as those of his soul consumed could do nothing.
Aragorn had insisted that the members of the Fellowship would linger for some time to Minas Tirith, at least until his coronation. That small group was something important, people of different races who had lived and fought side by side for months, creating strong and lasting friendship. Sooner or later the company would really loose, everyone would be back in their lands, and would be lost forever. Maybe some of them would meet again, but would no longer be found together. Aragorn, however, knew that their relationship would never break, and his companions would remain in his heart forever. A

Minas Tirith was warmly welcomed, not only for freeing the city from evil. The people she wanted her king. But for those who appreciate the love of his people, was not able to not feel out of place in the grand Royal Palace.
Now just finished the last interview with your prospective advisers, felt the need to stay a little 'alone with his thoughts. Mounted his horse and galloped to the south, without really knowing where he went, the important thing was to get away from the building. He came close to the beach, Legolas's horse grazed quietly in one of the last stretches of lawn. He stopped, went ashore and started walking, looking around.

Legolas was sitting on a rock, and looking at the immensity of the sea, its thin profile stood out against the intense blue of the sky, blond hair shining in the sunlight. So he went and stood beside him in silence.
Shortly after the elf spoke, without looking away from the water.

"You know, I never pushed so far south before. And I had never seen the sea.
I was a strange effect. It is wonderful, great. In his blue embrace a myriad of lights. In the morning he rose tones, and the evening is almost red, reflecting the light of sunset. Then at night seems to contain a light in his deep, because it's always a bit 'lighter than air, and becomes a mirror of stars. "

The man looked at him tenderly, in front of that childlike wonder.

"Beyond this sea, there are the lands of the West. They are too away because you can see, but I feel as if they call me from afar. Many of the elves as their true home, go back to, sooner or later. For me it has never been, you know? I never thought seriously of leaving Middle-earth. Yet, the first time I saw this sea, I felt a strange desire to cross it. As if a voice deep in my heart had told me that there is a place beyond the eternal and perfect, where an elf can be happy.
My people are tired of war and the evil beings that infest these lands. I am sure that many of them will start soon, maybe they will even my father and my brothers. "

put his fingers as he spoke opening of the tunic, absently stroking the pendant around his neck.

"Have you tried the desire to leave, too?"

Legolas shook his head.
"No. How could I be happy if I walked away from you? I heard my call. But I realized that I had to go, I realized at that moment, watching the waves. My destiny is not to pass beyond the sea. My time here is not finished yet. "

At these words, Aragorn knew it was time to take courage and face the speech that so troubled him.

"Legolas, we must talk."

"It is a bit 'you want to say something, right? "asked the elf.

The man sat down beside him. The elf was silent, waiting for the rest.

"Until now we were free. We were able to listen to our feelings, follow our hearts.
For a while I was deluded that we could continue like this forever, refusing to see the reality of things. But now ... I ... I take my responsibilities. Should I follow my destiny and fulfill my duties. "

" What does this mean? "Legolas said after a pause.

"Soon I will be crowned king of Gondor, and as such I do my duty to my people. And ... the important thing which a king has to worry about, is his inheritance. Will I get married and give birth to a son, to the stability of the kingdom ... "

" I know ... "the elf's response came immediately, interrupting the words that he did not want to hear. He remained motionless, only her lips trembled slightly.
"You once said you love me, you can not continue to do so in spite of this?"

"I will always love you. But ... "

" But I want to go? "Interrupted him again.

Aragorn waited a few minutes before responding to that application.

"What can I offer? A clandestine love lived in the shadows? Do you think you might be happy living like this? "

" And you think I'd be happier away from you? "He said, raising his voice and face for the first time to him. The eye suffering irate.

"I ... I just fear for you." He held out his hand to stroke his cheek. "I ... I want to shout to the whole world how I love you. But I can not. We will hide forever. And then ... If heaven wills it, I will have many more years to live, in front of me, but we both know that will pass quickly. Then I'll leave you alone. How will you feel, at that time? I do not want you to suffer ... "

" If you do not want to hurt me, then do not send me away. "He closed his eyes and gently rubbed her cheek against his hand as if to snatch a caress.

"You're the best thing that ever happened to me, Legolas. I would not separami you for no reason at all. But ... you're an immortal, and I can not accept that your life is broken because of me. "

" It would have broken you lose six. If I leave, it will be like killing myself. I ask you only to accept my love. I do not want to live away from you, I can not. "

Aragorn drew him to him and hugged him strong arms.

But keep with me would still not kill you, albeit more slowly?

---

When Aragorn awoke, the first light already lit up the sky. Legolas slept beside him, wrapped in sheets. The man sat up, rubbing his face with his hands to ward off the numbness of sleep. Then he looked at the elf still asleep. The blond hair, ivory skin. As in dreams just did.

had revised their stay in Lorien, its forests shrouded in gray mist of the morning. It was the day of departure, Galadriel Celeborn and, together with a group of guards, had accompanied them to the boats. Before you let them go, they had given them a cloak for each. Had helped them to wear them, and he accepted his mantle by a warrior, Aragorn could not help but look who helped Haldir Legolas to wear his, and arranged the quiver on his shoulder. Her look was not detached from the guard for a moment, his hands that closed the buckle-shaped leaf of the mantle from his lips that whispered something, and his melancholy smile. They had exchanged a few words softly, then Legolas nodded, and responded to the sad smile. He could not help but be jealous. Their faces were so neighbors.

It was the memory of that jealousy and wake him. Of that feeling of uncertainty that made him try.
He could out of his mind the idea that each state could be something in the past. Who knows, maybe one day would also have had the nerve to ask her. No, he never had to do it, if Legolas had guessed his jealousy, he would have mistaken for a lack of confidence in him, knowing him. This too was part of the differences between men and elves.

He got up, and pressing on the dressing gown, came out on the large balcony shivering with the cold air.

In the only other occasion in which had seen them together, he was still jealous of them. It happened at Helm's Deep, just hours before the battle. Two large groups of archers had come from Imladris and Lorien, the first commanded by Elladan, Elrohir accompanied by the second from Haldir.
They were fraternal embrace, upon arrival, he had observed all the time while chatting on the sidelines, waiting for orders. Then it was absorbed by the preparations, and finally from combat. The onslaught of the Uruk-hai had been violent and horrible, most of these men were not able to cope with such an enemy. As hundreds of their attackers continued to fall under the gusts of arrows of the elves, the battle was hard. Suddenly the Uruk-hai had brought down one side of the wall, and began a debilitating infighting. And while recalling the retreat, he saw Haldir dropped to his knees after being shot in the back, and Legolas join the fray to drag on. They were able to return to strong, and leave in the hands of healers, before returning to combat.
At the end of the battle, the elf had rushed to his bedside. Haldir's wound was deep, but he hoped to save. Legolas had been at his side, watching and taking care of him until he was considered out of danger. Even then, Aragorn had not been able to not feel jealous him, but ashamed of that feeling totally out of place.

In those days of battle, had the opportunity to speak with Elladan and Elrohir. Legolas had said how much he loved, and how he felt guilty towards Arwen. He understood that before his departure he had second thoughts, and hoped that would induce him to give up, even though he knew that this would have brought suffering anyway.

"Arwen Even if you give up, this does not stop suffering" Elladan said with a calm voice, but sharp. "An elf can love only once in life, Estel. Arwen will never forget you, Legolas, and even if they leave. "

If you leave ...

He wanted to tell him that he would never have left. But he knew would one day be forced to do so.
"... I will love him for life." He had merely responded.

"You can not control the heart." Elrohir had intervened, and for a moment he had set his brother, as if to emphasize the meaning of that phrase. "We know what you were distressed by your story. Anyway, you could not avoid Arwen fell in love with you. And you can not even drive to the heart of Legolas. "

Aragorn shook his head. "You are right to speak ill of men. We are weak. I had to reject both and Instead I did, wanting something that I am not worthy ... "

" Do not say that "it stopped Elrohir. "Do not say that" he then added up. "Love comes by itself, and can not disappear just because they rejected. Perhaps the weakness of men has prevented you understand what you're bound to Arwen, mistaking it for love ... but this would not have changed things. "

" Arwen had bewitched me, I loved him, he'll still want to, but not was love. I realized only now, when I met Legolas. "

was the truth. Never before meeting him, he had experienced feelings like that.

returned to the room and slipped back under the covers. Legolas let out a slight moan, barely moving his lips, but he continued to sleep.
Look at that marvelous creature sleeping next to him, who had won his heart forever.

"I have only my life, is the only thing I can give" had told him candidly that evening, while the flickering flame in the fireplace drew reddish light and shadow on his face. And he had felt a pang, and a node had closed for a moment by the throat. He had accepted something that should never have even desired. How could she be so selfish? The

touched her cheek with his fingertips, and kissed him gently on the lips, being careful not to wake him. He slid his hand along her silky hair, soft golden threads in the soft light glowed in the night sky.

Although I can not stay close forever, I'll do anything to make you happy.
